The Witcher season 3 finale is out on Netflix. And while it’s not the end of the series itself, it still feels a bit like it. After all, leading actor Henry Cavill is leaving the witcher epic, the role of Geralt of Rivia will be taken over by Liam Hemsworth in the coming season.

If you are now hoping for an explanation of how this change should take place, you will not find it in the finale of “The Witcher” Season 3. There is no guest appearance by Liam Hemsworth or a post-credits scene. Only one “The Witcher” producer revealed in a few interviews in advance how the “new” Geralt could be explained.

Nevertheless, we summarize the most important events from the season 3 finale and explain how “The Witcher” season 4 could continue.

Stubborn Geralt in Brokilon

In the fight against Vilgefortz, Witcher Geralt unexpectedly lost out. With a broken back and serious injuries, he now lies in the Brokilon, the Forest of the Dryads, trying to heal. But he is extremely stubborn and does not want to be helped. It is only when he learns that Ciri is being abducted to Nilfgaard that he finds new motivation to move on and help his foster daughter. However, the healing waters of the Brokilon have no effect on him. Dandelion is by his side all the time.

Sad farewell between Geralt and Yennefer

Finally, Yennefer comes to the Brokilon to see Geralt again (you’ll soon find out why she wasn’t there earlier). She heals his wounds and it is a sad goodbye between them. Yennefer must rebuild the Brotherhood of Wizards and Geralt is determined to regain his former strength and free Ciri.

The end of Geralt’s neutrality

Geralt’s witcher code allows him to remain neutral in political matters. Shortly before the Thanedd coup, he neither sides with Redanien nor with Nilfgaard. But that is over now. Nilfgaard and Emperor Emhyr var Emreis are his enemies because they have Ciri in their hands. This becomes clear when he kills almost all of the Nilfgaardian soldiers who are collecting tolls. He leaves one to tell Emhyr that he’s on his way and that he’s not kind to him.

Yennefer tries to keep the sorceresses together – the Brotherhood lies in ruins

After the Thanned coup, only a handful of sorceresses remain. The Brotherhood of Wizards is broken and Yennefer desperately tries to find clues to Ciri’s whereabouts. It is imperative to prevent Ciri from allying with Nilfgaard, lest the noble houses and kingdoms that Ciri rules join the enemy.

Tissaia has been a shadow of herself since the battle in Aretusa. Her hair is snow white from the exertions of the Thunder Spell, but the betrayal of her beloved Vilgefortz outweighs the physical suffering. She no longer has the strength to rebuild the Brotherhood and takes her own life. Yennefer and the other sorceresses must join forces to save their guild. Book readers know: This is the beginning of the Sorceress’ Lodge.

Fringilla confesses to Francesca the truth about her child – Nilfgaard’s plans for the elves

The elven sorceress Francesca and her Scoia’tael were instrumental in deciding the Thanedd coup in Nilfgaard’s favor. Also at her side is the sorceress Fringilla, who fell out of favor with Emhyr var Emreis, the Emperor of Nilfgaard. After the fighting in Aretusa, they call on Emhyr to negotiate a deal.

Francesca wants the safety of her elven people, including the fierce Scoia’tael. However, Emhyr only wants to protect the old and sick elves of Cintra who can no longer cause him any trouble. While Francesca considers taking the deal, Fringilla tells her the whole truth about Emhyr. That it was he who killed Francesca’s child and that he lies and cheats to achieve his goal. Now Francesca swears revenge – not only on Emhyr, but also on Fringilla, who knew about Emhyr’s plan, even inspired it and lied to Francesca.

Philippa and Dijkstra’s coup – long live King Radovid!

Sorceress Philippa and royal adviser Sigismund Dijkstra are forced to return to Redania with their tails between their tails after the Thanedd coup. King Vizimir is not happy that the two have failed and wants to set an example. Dijkstra is supposed to kill his lover Philippa. But Dijkstra doesn’t have the heart to do it. Drunk, he offers Philippa to kill him himself. The sorceress is very pleased with her companion’s proof of loyalty and has already thought a step ahead herself. A new king is needed.

Vizimir’s brother Radovid had previously proved to be a capable accomplice, so Philippa has Vizimir killed by a lady-in-waiting. Radovid is crowned as the new king of Redania right in front of his brother’s corpse.

“Ciri” in Nilfgaard

Vilgefortz, disfigured after Tor Lara’s explosion, has arrived at Nilfgaard’s court. There he continues his original plan, delivering Emhyr var Emreis not to Ciri but to Teryn, whom he previously brainwashed into believing she is Ciri. This spell was actually canceled by Geralt’s allies, but Teryn is now in Cintra as Ciri.

The scam about the fake Ciri doesn’t seem to have caught on yet, but if the books have anything to do with it, it could be that time soon. Both the sorceresses and Geralt will attempt to free Ciri from Emperor Emhyr’s clutches. The great war is inevitably imminent.

The real Ciri and the rats

The real Ciri was captured by bounty hunters after her involuntary trip to the Korath desert, as was a youth named Kayleigh, who belongs to the infamous gang of rats. This same gang of rats comes to their friend’s aid, they stir up the inn where Ciri and Kayleigh are being held captive. Together they can defeat the bounty hunters and Ciri is now part of the rat gang under the alias Falka.

So in Season 4 of “The Witcher” all three main characters are separated from each other again. However, Geralt will gather some allies on his journey to Nilfgaard, Yennefer brings the sorceresses to new power and Ciri enjoys life as an outlaw. New episodes will probably not appear until 2025.
