The Witcher – Sirens of the Deep: A new mission for Geralt – First trailer for the new Witcher anime film on Netflix

THE WITCHER

“The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep” is intended to adapt a well-known short story from the Witcher books. Two trailers have already been released for the new anime film. This is what is known so far.

  • “The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep” is the title of the next Witcher anime.
  • It adapts the short story “A Little Sacrifice” by Witcher author Andrzej Sapkowski.
  • An important character in this short story is the bard Essi Daven.

With “The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf,” Netflix broke new ground and turned a story from the Witcher universe into an anime. And the anime film wasn’t all that bad received by the otherwise critical fans. After the previous story of Witcher Vesemir, a new story will now be dealt with in the second anime film. The ones from the Bard Essi Daven.

There have been rumors for a long time (including from the fan site “Redanian Intelligence”), but now it is officially known that the new film “The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep” will be called. Actress Christina Wren (“Man of Steel”) will lend her voice to Essi.

When will The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep be released?

“The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep” is scheduled to be released at the end of 2024. We assume that the film will again be used as a gap filler between the seasons and that season 4 of “The Witcher” will probably not appear on Netflix until 2025.

The Witcher – Sirens of the Deep: Trailer

There is no full-length trailer yet, but Netflix has released two longer teasers for “The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep” as part of Netflix Geeked Week 2023. The announcement teaser focuses more on the introduction of Doug Cockle’s Geralt.

In the second teaser we see more of the plot and the characters. For example, we can already take a first look at Essi Daven. There is also a risk of war breaking out between humans and the sea peoples.

Essi Daven’s story is covered in Andrzej Sapkowski’s short story “A Small Sacrifice”. Among other things, it is about the tragic love story of the siren Sh’eenaz and Prince Agloval, for which Sapkowski was probably based on Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid”. The bard Essi meets Geralt in the story and there is a spark between the two.

The story also becomes a theme in the lyrics of the song “A Little Sacrifice”. Freya Allan, who plays Ciri in the main series, recorded the song for the Season 3 soundtrack.

But even if the anime film is based on this short story, there will still be some variations, as is often the case with adaptations. The official film description is as follows:

Geralt of Rivia, a mutant monster hunter, is hired to investigate a series of attacks in a coastal village and becomes drawn into a centuries-old conflict between humans and merfolk. He must rely on friends old and new to solve the mystery before hostilities between the two kingdoms escalate into all-out war.

Official film description of “The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep”

In the film, the sirens or mermaids seem to have teamed up with the Vodyanoi, fish people who can’t stand it when, for example, pearl divers invade their territory. Yennefer also did not appear in the short story. The Vodyanoi are targeting the town of Bremervoord, whose residents hire Geralt to help them against the fish people.

When does The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep take place?

According to Netflix, The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep takes place between Episode 5 and Episode 6 of the first season of The Witcher. So Geralt has already met Yennefer and Dandelion, but not Ciri yet.

Cast: Will Henry Cavill appear as Geralt of Rivia?

Neither Henry Cavill nor Liam Hemsworth will lend their voice to the character Geralt of Rivia in “The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep.” Instead, Doug Cockle takes on the voice role of the Witcher. Fans of “The Witcher” video games might recognize him, as he has already taken on the role of Geralt of Rivia in the English language version.

It has also been confirmed that Anya Chalotra and Joey Batey will be reprising their roles as Yennefer of Vengerberg and Dandelion. Newcomer Christina Wren takes on the role of bard Essi Daven.

The Witcher – Sirens of the Deep: Production

The film “The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep” was written by Mike Ostrowski and Rae Benjamin. The producer is “The Witcher” showrunner Lauren Hissrich. Witcher author Andrzej Sapkowski served as an advisor. The director is Kang Hei Chul, who was also a storyboard artist on “The Witcher”.

The animation studio responsible for the film is the South Korean studio MIR, which also produced the first “The Witcher” anime “Nightmare of the Wolf” as well as “The Legend of Korra” and “Voltron: Legendary Defender”.
