The Woop method – motivational training: effects instead of miracles

After more than a month of New Year’s resolutions, there are likely to be many people who are about to give up on good ideas or have already given up. Do not do that! We will introduce you to a method that works well and also present books that deal with the topic.

The WOOP method comes from New York University psychology professor Gabriele Oettingen. For 20 years she studied which self-regulation strategies people use to achieve their desired future goals. The result of this is the mosaic word: W(ish- in German “desire”) O(utcome – “result”) O(bstacle – “obstacle”) P(lan). This WOOP method is intended to be particularly goal-oriented: It gives us a goal and also helps us through the obstacles and difficulties that are encountered on the way to this goal. She confronts us with the obstacles in advance and also provides solutions for the different scenarios. It doesn’t pretend that everything will be fine, instead the method shows alternatives in the event of a setback. This makes the whole thing much more lifelike than other motivational methods. And it all takes less than 10 minutes.WOOP consists of seven (eight) steps: Before you start, make sure that everything around you is quiet and that nobody will disturb you while you are making important decisions. You should decide what kind of progress and in which area you want to make. That can be one day, but also 10 years. No completely unrealistic plans (Rome wasn’t built in a day) Think about the next month. What is your most important wish and in which area? Summarize it briefly and concisely, with a maximum of six words. Think about what would be the best thing about realizing that goal. What result would that be? What feelings would that trigger? Summarize this in a nutshell, with a maximum of six words. It might be important later. Now you need a few minutes to visualize the whole thing. Feel free to go into the details. This is not daydreaming, but conscious imagination, which also reveals the obstacles. Identify the obstacles! What can prevent you from realizing your desire? What is holding you back from your dream? What are your main inner and outer dams? Take notes, as always, keep them short and sweet, using no more than six words to summarize your answer. Imagine the obstacle or obstacles for a few seconds. Here, plan even the smallest details so that no unexpected problems arise. Establish a “what if” plan. What will happen if something goes wrong? And what can you do to get over the obstacle? Say exactly how you would act (name the specific action) and also write it down. WOOP can also be started with a piece of paper, but the method also includes an app. You can always see how far you are, how close or far you are from your goal. You can look at it every morning. Most importantly, WOOP doesn’t promise a miracle. If you just follow the steps but don’t do anything in everyday life, you shouldn’t expect any results either. The psychology of success€20.55Click here for the book. The starter concept: learn to increase motivation and discipline for more success in life and at work , exercising or losing weight.
