Having become common in French language, the word “cyber attack” was still absent from the last edition of Petit Larousse. A deficiency which will finally be filled with its addition in the 2025 version.

Its absence will surprise you, but take your latest Petit Larousse Illustré and look for the word “cyber attack”. Didn’t find anything? This is normal, one could say, because it is simply conspicuous by its absence, which has surprised, for years, the entire French cyber community, which therefore welcomes its arrival in the 2025 edition with a slightly teasing smile. , to be released in the coming days.

Cyberattacks have been in the news for several years in France

We are not exaggerating to say that cybersecurity is omnipresent in our society. Cyberattacks, which are in some ways the evil expression of this discipline, have been in the news for several years and more than ever in France, at the dawn of the local Olympic Games which promise to be quite eventful in terms of security. computer security, says ANSSI, the French cyber agency.

In public opinion, the saddest and most regrettable expression of a cyberattack remains the one that can affect a hospital. Unfortunately, the examples are more than numerous. The recent attack on the Cannes hospital establishment by the international group LockBit is one of them.

Cyberattacks take multiple forms, and the threats that affect the general public are mainly account takeover (23.5% of attacks in 2023), phishing (21.2%) and ransomware (16.6%), according to figures given by Cybermalveillance.gouv.fr.

Cyberattack in Larousse, as obvious

The word “cyber attack” therefore finally makes its appearance in the Petit Larousse Illustré which will be available on May 22, at the recommended price of 32.95 euros in paperback format. Among the 63,500 words present in the dictionary, 150 are making their entry. Several other terms associated with new technologies will shine there.

In addition to cyberattack, we can cite “digital”, which we no longer present, or “detox”, which corresponds to detoxification, weaning from digital. “Cracker”, which we knew for its definition of “ small crispy savory biscuit » but which can also designate a computer hacker, is one of the new kids. Finally, let us cite the term “femtech”, which taken from the English expression Female technology now designates technology designed for women.

On LinkedIn, several cyber professionals have in any case welcomed the arrival of the word “cyber attack”. “ After all these years of hearing on the news that this or that organization had been the victim of a cyberattack, it was time! Fortunately the world of Cyber didn’t wait for Larousse. Yes, I know, it takes a while for the word to enter a dictionary, but still », sums up Aubin Chapuzet, engineer at Free Pro.
