The workstation, the hidden face of employee costs

The cost of the workplace increases by 9.4% in 2022 compared to 2021, indicates the latest study from IDET (Inspire and develop work environments), the association of work environment directors. Published on October 17, it was carried out from April to October 2023 among a panel of 118 sites of member companies (including 51% outside Ile-de-France) representing nearly 100,000 workstations, 2 million meters squares and 124,000 employees.

Slippage? It should rather be seen as the consequence of catching up. The total annual cost of a workplace in 2022 – which includes real estate (rent and insurance), related operating costs (cleanliness, energy, maintenance of premises, etc.), resources and equipment for employees (business travel, company cars, telephony, concierge service, office supplies, etc.) – is 13,658 euros, almost returning to its pre-Covid level. These 13,658 euros corresponding to an average, this means that the cost of the workstation of a simple office worker working in the very expensive Champs-Elysées district, in Paris, can represent a good part of the salary he receives. .

Sobriety plans

The study aims to list the developments in the different components of the workstation. Unsurprisingly, the biggest increase in 2022 concerns operating costs, due in particular to the surge in gas and electricity prices. Result ? “Without initiatives, energy can quickly outweigh safety, technical maintenance or cleanliness in operating costs”explains Séverine Pilverdier, president of IDET and director of the working environment at BNP Paribas Real Estate.

But, here again, we must put it into perspective: in 2022, IDET member companies spent 518.70 euros on energy, which therefore represents less than 5% of the total cost of the workstation. The fact remains that this budget line mobilizes a good part of their efforts, because any reduction in energy consumption limits the increase in the bill and contributes to reducing their carbon footprint.

To kill two birds with one stone, companies have implemented sobriety plans in 2022. “Those who inaugurate new premises install systems which cut off the light and heating centrally from a certain time. Others are introducing teleworking on Fridays for all staff, which makes it possible to reduce the energy bill for three days in a row and to be more “green”.”observes Séverine Pilverdier.
