The year 2020 called the worst year in history by Time Magazine

The year 2020 has not been easy, especially because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Time Magazine simply called it the worst year in history on its new cover, which goes on sale December 14th.

Is 2020 the worst year in history? In any case, that's what the Time Magazine. On its new cover, we can see the number "2020 " crossed out in red as the magazine assures us that this is the worst year in human history.

Stephanie Zacharek, author of the article and film critic for the magazine, explains from the start that there has been "Worse years in the history of the United States, and certainly worse years in the history of the world, but most of us living today haven't seen anything like it."

About the two world wars, Stephanie Zacharek explains : "One would have to be over 100 years old to remember the ravages of World War I and the Spanish Flu; about 90 years to get a sense of the economic deprivation brought on by the Great Depression; and about 80 years to keep any memory of the Second World War and its horrors ". So, according to her, the year 2020 is quite simply the worst year in human memory.

While the article obviously refers to the Covid-19 pandemic which has largely marked this year 2020, the journalist from the Time evokes ofother problems that have marked these last months. She explains that "the world had started to fall apart long before ", due to the bushfires in Australia, followed by a similar disaster in California. She then returns to George Floyd's death, which triggered "anger that is justified not only across the country but around the world. " Stephanie Zacharek then spoke about the US presidential election, which showed that "Somehow we fixed democracy with a piece of duct tape, just in time."

This One has aroused many reactions. Several Internet users have shown their disagreement with the Time Magazine. The Star Tribune recalled in particular that the year 2016 had not been easy either with in particular a bitter presidential election in the United States, the Syrian refugee crisis, the shooting in an Orlando nightclub, the death of Prince, David Bowie, Philando Castile, Carrie Fisher but also the infestation of mosquitoes carrying the Zika virus. At the end of the year, a series of articles on "16 reasons 2016 was the worst year ever"had seen the light of day.

The online magazine also recalls 1942, the year a world war killed millions and marked the deadliest months of the Holocaust and the start of the Battle of Stalingrad. In 1919, the planet was experiencing a deadly flu pandemic, anarchist bombings and widespread racial violence in the United States during a post-war recession. 2020 is therefore a difficult year for many but does not appear to be the worst in history. However, many Internet users have stressed that we can wait impatiently for 2021.
