The year in shooters: There was a lot of shooting in 2021

Just a new Call of Duty, a new Battlefield and even a new Halo within a few weeks made 2021 the year for fans of the weapon and crosshair genre. But not only sequels dominated the discussions about the genre this year.

Shooter in 2021: controversies, short flights of fancy and surprises

A few words in advance: This is not a ranking, but an incomplete list of genre representatives that you as shooter fans should not have missed this year. Of course, each of you also has personal top games that are not featured here. Only new releases were taken into account for the list, i.e. no new editions or the start of early access phases. Yes, you are right, it still felt that way with one game or another.

Call of Duty Vanguard: All weapons – list, pictures & information

Call of Duty: Vanguard

A new year always means a new CoD. Activision returned to WWII with Vanguard. The campaign was the usual staging fireworks and leaves a lot of potential, the zombie mode is still a shadow of itself and the multiplayer plays well, but is more and more the place to level weapons for Warzone.

Battlefield 2042

Battlefield 2042 had a more than controversial launch. The community criticized not only the many bugs and performance problems, but also some gameplay decisions. Thanks to Battlefield Portal and the remakes of three older games in the series, nostalgics got their money’s worth.

Halo Infinite

With a surprising release of a multiplayer beta from Halo Infinite, Microsoft actually made a comeback for the arena shooter. The campaign release showed some exciting advancements in gameplay, despite the somewhat controversial decision to give the newest Halo a little open world.

Far Cry 6

The full load of Ubisoft Open World was there again in Far Cry 6. As part of the guerrilla, the dictator of a Caribbean island (not Cuba!) Must be overthrown. Unfortunately, the story gets lost in the pretty open world. To let off steam on Yara and not look too closely, but definitely has its charm.

Back 4 Blood

The spiritual successor to Left 4 Dead with the name Back 4 Blood, expected by many, does a lot differently. In the case of the new deck system, this is a really successful idea, but there is a problem with the PvP mode. For the fans, however, omitting the Versus mode for the campaign was a stab in the foul heart.

Outriders

Outriders attracted attention in the loot shooter category at the beginning of the year. With many opportunities for character development and fun co-op synergies, a motivating hunt for better loot succeeded.

Returnal

Returnal landed a surprise hit for the PlayStation. The principle of “Live, Die, Repeat” works extremely well in this third-person shooter. The atmospheric game world invites you to explore and offers not only different types of opponents, but also a lot of variety in terms of weapons and equipment.

Our test for Returnal.

Deathloop

Strange time loops are also part of the concept of Deathloop. You repeat the same day until you have killed eight specific targets. There are many different styles of play that lead to the goal and a game world rich in details and secrets. The retro look may not appeal to everyone, and the game sometimes takes you by the hand a little too much.

Hell let loose

For fans of realistic first-person shooters, Hell Let Loose was released this year. Hell Let Loose is somewhere between hardcore sim and fast-paced arcade action. Tactical planning, a joint approach and good communication are a must for every gamer and therefore Hell Let Loose is not the right thing for all shooter fans.

New Pokémon Snap

The lens you’re looking through doesn’t necessarily have to be part of a rifle scope. It can also be the lens of a camera. New Pokémon Snap is about taking particularly cool photos of Pokémon. That sounds banal, but it is extremely relaxing. After all the blast, you’ve earned a Zen moment.
