In The Young and the Restless on TF1, Sharon has just discovered that she is suffering from breast cancer… Devastated, the endearing resident of Genoa City is despite everything combative because she can count on the unfailing support of his family and loved ones.
For AlloCiné, Sharon Case, who has played the character since 1994, looks back on this poignant plot and reveals the difficult times that await Sharon on screen. By the way, the actress also looks back on her career in the American soap opera which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2023…
AlloCiné: In France in the episodes of “The Fires of Love”, Sharon learns that she has breast cancer. What was your reaction when you discovered this?
Sharon Case: I thought this was going to be a heartbreaking plot. The series has featured similar stories in the past as The Young and the Restless often deals with the real issues that are happening in our world.
I felt honored to be at the center of such an important story that touched so many people. Many fans contacted me on social media to share with me their fight against cancer.
Did you feel a pressure on your shoulders to play this plot?
Sure. I really wanted to transcribe what patients feel and describe the emotions they go through. The ups and downs, the physical manifestations of the treatment… I wanted to interpret that as best I could.
How did the audience react to following this story?
Many viewers told me about their backgrounds and what they themselves had been through. Some like to share their ordeals upon seeing these plots as they resemble what they have experienced. Most people have told me that Sharon’s story helped them because they could relate to it.
What will be Sharon’s reaction to face the disease?
Sharon is an optimist and a strong woman. She is determined to fight on, taking things one day at a time. Rey (Jordi Vilasuso, editor’s note), her companion, is there for her. It is his rock. Having him by his side, during the good days as well as the bad, helps him enormously. Her confident point of view is very important to her.
How will his relatives and family help him?
Her family will rally around her and their ties will all become closer. Nick (Joshua Morrow, editor’s note) and their children will be there to support her. It is also a story about the family which is very touching.
Will the couple of Sharon and Rey become stronger during this ordeal?
In effect. They too have already experienced happy and difficult times as a couple. This disease thwarts their plan to finally live a “normal” relationship… But they will be able to stay united.
You have been playing in “The Fires of Love” since 1994. Have you ever thought of leaving the soap opera?
Never ! I like being here. About every two years I get a great story like this. It makes my job interesting, there is always something going on! These are thrilling storylines that keep my interest to stay intact.
How do you prefer to play Sharon: as a fragile and innocent mother and wife or as a strong and complex woman?
I prefer it complex. She is bipolar and undergoing treatment. I loved performing when she wasn’t taking her meds and messing around. It’s another disease from which she suffers but which, on the other hand, will never go away… It could resurface again. Sharon’s bipolarity adds to her complexity.
Are there any storylines that you don’t enjoy playing?
I don’t really like being in a plot where a character dies… It’s always so sad! Like when Cassie (Camryn Grimes, editor’s note) died for example. It was an incredible but absolutely depressing story…I don’t think anyone ever got over it! (laughs) It’s hard to play that. Just like years ago, with the death of Drucilla (Victoria Rowell, editor’s note)… It’s also difficult because our partners who play these characters who die leave the series.
Who do you think is Sharon’s true love?
It’s not determined yet… And I’m not supposed to give my opinion so that the public continues to question themselves! In truth, we cannot know. Sharon and Nick are each other’s true loves and will always be that way. Their feelings are eternal but what will that mean in the future?
It is too early to define it. They both had a lot of relationships in the series… Anyway, I like playing with Joshua Morrow because he is very fun and to interpret a scene with him is easy. It’s like coming home.
Apart from Nick or even Adam (Mark Grossmannote), which former lover of Sharon was a good match for her?
Dylan (Steve Burton, editor’s note)! Apart from him, I confess to having trouble remembering myself… (laughs)
Do you plan to stay with Genoa City for a long time?
Absolutely. We will celebrate our 50th anniversary next year. I know that The Young and the Restless has plenty of surprises for fans for the whole season! I look forward.
What does this incredible anniversary mean to you?
My god, I feel immensely grateful to have been part of this series for so many years. These 50 years are an extraordinary step, I am very happy to be here to participate.
