Since her love affair with entertainer legend Thomas Gottschalk, 73, in 2019, Thea Gottschalk, 77, has hardly been seen in public at all. The Gottschalks had their last family appearance together on July 25, 2018 at the opening of the Bayreuth Festival. Since then, the native Bavarian has only appeared on the Instagram account of her son Roman Gottschalk, 40, who, unlike his mother, is venturing more and more into the public eye. But how has the former woman lived at the TV star’s side since their love affair ended four years ago?
Thea Gottschalk: Radiant autumn visit to her son Roman in San Diego
Thea Gottschalk beams overjoyed in a rare photo that son Roman published on Instagram on October 23rd, competing with him and his wife Melissa. The 77-year-old visited the couple and their grandson Sebastian in San Diego, California, where the family has lived for several years. The 40-year-old revealed to “Bunte” just this year that the separation was “not easy” for Thea, but emphasized: “My mother has now come to terms with it and is living her life.”
Thea Gottschalk continues to stay in Malibu, where the family once had a shared property that fell victim to the devastating forest fire in November 2018. The Gottschalks moved there in the mid-90s to protect their kids from the press hype.

According to “Bunte”, Thea now lives in a cozy villa in Malibu with her cats, which she was able to save from the fire. She has remained loyal to the celebrity hotspot and one of the most expensive areas in the Californian metropolis of Los Angeles. What also speaks for Thea’s center of life in the USA? Her sons, daughters-in-law and grandchild Sebastian. Roman’s hometown of San Diego is just a three-hour drive from Malibu.
In addition to Roman, her younger child Tristan, 34, also continues to live in the States. He moved to New York with his wife Alexa. The couple tied the knot there in May of this year. Thea’s ex Thomas also posted footage of their big day on his Instagram account. Among other things, he shared the words: “Nobody needs family photos with the ex (except the press).” A little swipe? One can only speculate.

It is not known whether Thea has found new love like her ex. But what is certain is that she has a very close relationship with her loved ones. This is indicated by a recent comment from her daughter-in-law Melissa Gottschalk on Instagram. Under the new photo together with Thea, she reveals that her husband Roman would call his mother “Mom”, her son Basti calls her “Mimi” and she herself calls her mother-in-law either by her first name Thea or affectionately “mother-in-law”. According to “Bunte”, the family spent the 2022 Christmas holidays together.

In March 2019 it became known that Thomas and Thea Gottschalk had “separated some time ago,” their lawyer confirmed to GALA. At this point, the former couple, who are parents to two children, had been married for 42 years. Thomas Gottschalk, who appeared for the first time with his current partner Karina Mroß in the summer of 2019, described the end of love as a life decision to “Bunte”.
He explained in June this year: “I fell so in love with Karina that there could be no other decision. I didn’t want to lie to myself or my wife. So I took the last exit and am a happy man today.” Thomas now lives back in Germany, to be more precise in Baden-Baden with his Karina.
