web browsers

Since two months, Microsoft Edge stole from Safari second place in the ranking of browsers most popular on desktop.

Each month, StatCounter communicates the popularity of each internet browser. Google Chrome remains unbeatable, regardless of the platform, but it is jostling behind.

Google Chrome… and the others

If you allow us this sporting analogy, the market for web browsers for the desktop segment looks a bit like Ligue 1 football this year: there is no suspense for first place, but the fight is raging for those who follow.

Indeed, the hegemonic Google Chrome has comfortably reigned over all the rankings for years. In the desktop PC segment, for example, it has had an outrageous market share of more than 60% since March 2016.

In April 2022, Google Chrome therefore remains the undisputed leader with a market share of 66.64% in the desktop segment, 63.57% for the mobile segment, and 64.36% for all platforms.

The War of the Seconds

On the other hand, the king has a new dolphin on the desktop segment. Microsoft Edge has been ahead of Safari for two months. The browser of the Redmond firm weighed 10.07% last month, that of the Apple brand 9.61%. In fact, this shift in hierarchy dates back to March: Edge represented 9.65% of PDM, Safari 9.56%.

In addition, note the dropout of Mozilla Firefox for a few weeks. In February, with a popularity of 9.47%, it was neck and neck with Edge (9.61%) and Safari (9.77%). Since then, the browser has stalled with a PDM of 7.57% in March and 7.87% in April.

Safari still good second on all platforms

Well, we were talking about the desktop computer market above. When considering all platforms, Microsoft Edge suffers greatly from its virtual absence in the smartphone segment.

Thus, thanks to a market share of 24.83% on mobiles, Safari remains solid second when considering general popularity: it weighs in at 19.13%. In third place, Microsoft Edge is far behind with 4.07% of PDM, followed by Mozilla and its 3.41%.
