“There is music”: will the Joker and Harley Quinn sing in the sequel?

It’s an interview that sows doubt. The director of photography for “Joker: Folie à deux” gave some details on the approach to this sequel led by Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga.

It’s the Joker’s characteristic to appear when you least expect him. And this is how Batman’s nemesis took advantage of Valentine’s Day to remember us fondly in photos. With her dear and tender Harley Quinn, who will have the features of Lady Gaga in Folie à Deux, the 2019 blockbuster sequel worn by Joaquin Phoenix, who reprises the role in this film expected in our theaters on October 2.

When is the trailer coming?

“I hope your day is filled with love”wrote director Todd Phillips to accompany these photos on Instagram. Before giving a vague upload date for the trailer: mid-April. So not right away, but the communication strategy seems close to that of the first film, the images of which we discovered on April 3, 2019.

We must therefore wait two more months before discovering the approach of this sequel announced as a musical film… but which ultimately would not really be. “There is music, but it’s not a musical film strictly speaking but… there’s just music in it”declared cinematographer Lawrence Sher during a online masterclass.

“The music is part of the film and the characters, but I don’t know if it’s a musical”

“The music is part of the film and the characters, but I don’t know if it’s a musical. But there is music, as there was a lot in the first Joker. And there are things that we couldn’t do in this film and which, by extension, are part of the DNA of the sequel.”

To be or not to be musical?

Beyond the fact that Lawrence Sher sometimes does not seem certain of what he is saying (even though he actively participated in the filming and the photos on a black background or on the roof look very musical), these words will not fail to raise questions. Is Joker: Folie à Deux trying to hide its nature as a musical film (like Wonka, Mean Girls or Wicked), so as not to cut itself off from a part of the public, allergic to all forms of song?

Or has Todd Phillips somewhat revised his initial plans, even though it was always announced that this sequel would be musical, making the arrival of Lady Gaga in the cast all the more logical? First elements of the answer, we hope, in the trailer. So in mid-April.
