There is no longer any doubt about the arrival of Apple’s VR headset

xrOS, xrProOS, XROS… Apple is increasing the filing of brand names, while its “Reality Pro” headset should be announced on June 5. This type of procedure is generally synonymous with an imminent announcement.

At WWDC on June 5, there should be a major announcement. After several years of rumors that predicted the announcement of Apple’s VR headset almost every year, the Californian brand should enter the mixed reality market well at its next developer conference.

In April and May 2023, Apple registered the “xrOS” brand name several times, as well as variations (“xrProOS” and “XROS”), no doubt to prevent the competition from drawing inspiration from the name of its future device. exploitation. Apple has a habit of acting at the last minute, which suggests that the Reality Pro under xrOS will arrive in a few days.

xrOS would be the chosen one

For several months, rumors have multiplied on the name of the future product from Apple. Reality Pro, Reality One… Apple would have several names, which makes it impossible to predict anything at the time of writing these lines. As for the operating system, several supposed names have often been mentioned in the press, such as realityOS, rOS and xrOS. The only certainty is that Apple will remain in the continuity of its other systems (iOS, iPadOS or macOS).

On May 10, the “xrOS” trademark filing was spotted in New Zealand. It is not Apple who is at the origin, but a certain Deep Dive, established in Delaware. A common practice in the industry, which uses shell companies to avoid attracting too much attention. On May 18, the same Deep Dive registered the xrProOS name in the Philippines, Argentina and Turkey. Other similar deposits exist in Australia, the United Kingdom and Jamaica, while others have probably not yet been spotted. In short, everything suggests that Apple is agitated, while its announcement is imminent.

Apple Reality: what to expect?

A few days before WWDC, articles on the Apple Reality Pro headset are multiplying. On May 18, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg explained, for example, that Apple was torn between excitement and skepticism, while its VR headset should not be popular enough to appeal as much as an iPhone or iPad when it was launched. However, the brand has finally decided to launch, after having spent the last three years pushing back its project.

If Apple does things right, the video presentation of its mixed reality headset should impress its world on June 5, mixing virtual reality and augmented reality to immerse its user in a world close to reality, with virtual information that superimposed on his vision. The risk for Apple is that the wow effect does not last and that no one really wants their headphones.
