Fairphone is embarking on the occasion by marketing refurbished FairPhone 3: the very principle of longevity according to the brand.
If, like the teams at Fairphone, you care about the planet and the well-being of its inhabitants, buying a brand new smartphone can hurt your ethics. The Dutch company therefore has another solution: a reconditioned model. The company is entering this market, for the moment with a single product, the Fairphone 3 New Life Edition – or Fairphone 3 New Life Edition in good French.
The second hand, an ecological approach
According to Fairphone, “ taking this step is probably the greenest choice you can make “, even if it is not necessary the ” repeat at Fairphone 4 “. Indeed, as the company points out, a refurbished phone does not imply anything new, therefore nothing polluting.
For the record, the Fairphone 3 has been marketed in France since September 2019. It is a smartphone that was already sold at the time as “eco-responsible”, with a manufacturing process taking into account environmental and social factors –
considerations often pushed into the background by other brands, if not totally neglected – and very good repairability.
An approach based on the principle of “longevity”
For many of us, not getting the latest fashionable toy and going on a 2019 smartphone can be off-putting.
In an attempt to change our minds, Fairphone reminds us that its smartphones are designed with longevity in mind from the start, in other words to stand the test of time, both in hardware and software. The company also notes that e-waste is currently the fastest growing waste stream in the world.
If these generalist arguments will leave some people indifferent, other elements more specific to the Fairphone 3 New Life edition may concern them more.
Smartphones are refurbished and tested in France (in a factory located in Haute-Savoie). All come with a battery guaranteeing at least 80% of the original capacity. In addition, they benefit from the same 2-year manufacturing warranty initially granted to new models.
90 euros cheaper
In September 2019, the Fairphone 3 was marketed at the recommended price of 450 euros. These refurbished versions cost 359 euros. Available stocks are logically limited.
Finally, if it is rather the Fairphone 3+ that interests you, the brand warns that refurbished versions of the latter will be offered within a few weeks.
