There’s a message behind it: That means a yellow ribbon on fruit trees

Anyone who spends a lot of time outdoors this summer may have already seen one or the other tree with a yellow ribbon. However, the yellow ribbons should by no means only look good, they should convey an important message.

It is the time of the fallen fruit: Apple, pear and plum trees are now ready to bear ripe, edible fruit. Especially with trees along the way, the good fruit is often not harvested and used. The ripe fruits fall off and perish on the ground.

Nationwide action against wasting fruit

In order to curb this waste of food, the Germany-wide campaign “Too good for the bin” was started. As part of this project, yellow ribbons are to be attached to fruit trees whose fruits are not used by the owners. These are then used by passers-by as a sign that the fruit of the tree can be picked and eaten.

In Lower Saxony, for example, the Oldenburg Society “Zehn” distributes yellow ribbons to fruit tree owners. Until the end of September, passers-by will be made aware that fruit that is not required is growing here and may be harvested.

This is normally not permitted with trees along the way or even on private property. The explicit permission to pick and eat is intended to prevent unharvested fruit from spoiling and wasting.

Map shows where wild fruit trees grow

In Germany there are wild fruit trees, shrubs and herbs almost everywhere. With the interactive map from Mundraub you can see where you can find fresh raspberries, cherries, apples and much more in your area and where you can simply take them with you.
