“There’s a sense of relief, there’s a sense of sadness”: Joe Keery on the ending of Stranger Things

‘Stranger Things’ star Joe Keery has “complicated feelings” about the fifth and final season of Netflix’s flagship series.

Joe Keery is set to say goodbye to his fan-favorite Steve Harrington character in Stranger Things as the Netflix series is set to come to an end after five seasons. For the actor present since the start of the show, it’s a bittersweet moment.

During a recent interview with Women’s Wear Daily (via The Hollywood Reporter), conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike, the actor and musician opened up about ending his time at Hawkins.

I feel like it’s time. It won’t be easy to end the series. I mean, I owe my whole career to this show and all the opportunities I’ve had since are due to this show. So it’s very complicated. There is a feeling of relief, there is a feeling of sadness.

In 2016, the young actor made his debut as Steve Harrington in the first season of the series alongside Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Natalia Dyer and Charlie Eaton. Over the course of the first four chapters, her character transforms from “bad boy” to loyal ally surprising the core team (and audiences) as she battles the terrifying forces from the Upside Down.

The production of the fifth and final season of the Duffer Brothers show is currently delayed due to ongoing strikes by actors and writers. But once filming resumes, Joe Keery wants to enjoy every last moment.

I guess my goal is to soak in as much as I can while we’re doing it, and not take anything for granted because it’s been an amazing adventure with great people. And then once it’s done, moving forward and trying to retain the joy that we had when we did it… Everything has a beginning, a middle and an end. It will be nice to be done too.

ALL READY TO MOVE ON

Joe Keery is not the only star of Stranger Things to have spoken about his preparation for the end of the series and to embark on new projects.

Earlier this year, Millie Bobby Brown told Seventeen magazine (via Deadline) that she was “very ready to say goodbye” to her cult character of Eleven and that she was excited for the continuation of her career.

I think I’m ready. It was a very important factor in part of my life but it’s like having a high school diploma, it’s like a final year [de lycée]. You are ready to flourish and blossom and are grateful for the time you have spent, but it is time to create your own message and live your own life.

David Harbour, who plays the beloved Jim Hopper, also said: “It’s time for us to leave this nest and try other things and different projects. And let the Duffer brothers try different things as well.

In March, Gaten Matarazzo had, meanwhile, admitted on the Jimmy Fallon Tonight Show set that even though he had a “deep fear“of the end of the series, he was also excited”to see how these characters will finally develop one last time, and how they will end their journey.

While waiting to be able to discover the last season of Stranger Things, the first four chapters are to be reviewed exclusively on Netflix.
