“Installing a gas heater now is a mistake”

The heating installer Thermondo wants to convince the Germans of the heat pump – and does not believe in using hydrogen in the heat supply. In the “Zero Hour” podcast, Managing Director Pausder reports what percentage of single-family homes are suitable for a heat pump.
The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung calls him the “king of heat pumps”: Philipp Pausder, boss and founder of the start-up Thermondo, is on the way to becoming one of the big beneficiaries of the conversion in the heating market. Thermondo, which claims to be the largest heating installer in Germany, only started to equip its customers with heat pumps in 2022. And the company still installs gas heaters.
However, that should soon be a thing of the past, believes Pausder: “Gas heating is a discontinued model,” he says in the podcast “Zero Hour”. “Installing a gas heater now is a mistake.” From his point of view, “90 percent of German single-family homes” are suitable for a heat pump, which is why he even tries to convince his clientele of this in personal discussions.
The Thermondo boss says he drives to his customers himself two days a week. “There are a lot of people who are still buying fossil fuel heating. This is an enormous risk,” says Pausder. Pausder takes a hard stance on the FDP and its opposition to the original form of the heating law planned by Economics Minister Robert Habeck: “The FDP is acting against the interests of local industry,” he says.
“If I take climate neutrality for 2045 seriously, I personally cannot understand that people act like that.” In particular, the Thermondo boss does not believe in the idea of using hydrogen in heating systems. “Anyone who claims that green hydrogen will end up in domestic heating in sufficient quantities in the next 15 years is, in my view, unpatriotic,” he says. “That really is a lie.”
