These 6 Apple products that haven’t yet switched to USB-C

One of the biggest changes brought by the iPhone 15 is the move to USB-C. No more Lightning for Apple smartphones, but also for AirPods Pro. If the brand had no choice, there are still a few products that have not been included.

Change in connectivity at Apple with the arrival of the iPhone 15. While the rest of the industry agrees to integrate USB-C everywhere, Apple continued to resist with its Lightning. The opportunity to be able to scrounge up a lot of money on cables and other accessories that connect wired to iPhones. It took nothing less than European legislation to make Apple falter: from 2025, all electronic products sold (or almost) will have to include a USB-C charging port. Which only leaves a year and a few months for Apple to convert several of its products which are still in Lightning.

Will the next iPhone SE be USB-C?

The rumors have been there for several months: Apple would be working, without much surprise, on a new version of the iPhone SE. Important change: it would take the design of the iPhone XR, which would put an end to the borders at the top and bottom and make Touch ID disappear in favor of Face ID. If we thought it would be released in 2024, two analysts believe that Apple would reserve this future iPhone SE for 2025.

Which means that the manufacturer would no longer have a choice: to release it in Europe, it will have to integrate a USB-C port. If it comes out in 2024, Apple would be within its rights to keep the Lightning, but we can think that it would still choose USB-C. This is what the brand did with the iPhone 15, even though it was not legally obliged to do so.

AirPods “ everything short » will inevitably pass there

Apple took advantage of its keynote to update its AirPods Pro 2. No more Lightning port: they switched to USB-C. Another pair should logically be there: the AirPods 4. We can think that they will arrive in 2024, or in 2025, since the AirPods 3 were released in 2021, which is starting to date.

If they come out next year, Apple would still be within its rights by keeping the Lightning port. But again, this seems unlikely, because of the iPhone 15s which have made the transition.

The AirPods Max in a future version too?

It was Apple’s first headset, arriving in stores at the end of 2020: the AirPods Max. No USB-C for this wireless headset, but Lightning. We do not know when the “ AirPods Max 2 » will come out, if it ever comes out. But it is clear that the chances of it switching to USB-C are high.

Mac accessories

In the end, there are a number of products already in USB-C from Apple: MacBooks can be recharged via this connection, Studio Displays work with it and iPads are now all in USB-C. There remains only one range which is still blocked in Lightning: Mac accessories.

Magic Mouse: USB-C or Lightning, we especially ask Apple to change the location of the port

The Magic Mouse has been recharging for several years… using Lightning. However, it comes with a Lightning to USB-C cable. Switching to USB-C permanently would obviously be commendable. No need to check if you are using the correct end of the cable to plug in the mouse.

However, this is not what we most expect from this mouse. What all fans of the brand (and the mouse) are asking for is to change the location of the charging port. Currently it is located… under the mouse. Which makes it impossible to use the Magic Mouse while charging it.

Magic Keyboard: still in Lightning too

The same goes for the Magic Keyboard: still in Lightning for years. He also currently has a USB-C to Lightning cable. Logically, if Apple switches one of the Mac accessories to USB-C, this will be the case for all of them.

Presumably, the iMac’s move to the Apple M2 chip would be the perfect time to switch the Magic Mouse and Magic Keyboard peripherals to USB-C.

Magic Trackpad: it should follow

Less known, the Magic Trackpad is in fact a touchpad, the same one found on a laptop, but remote. It can be used with a keyboard, such as the Magic Keyboard. It is also a Mac accessory that recharges using Lightning.
