In many moments, the microwave makes our life easier because it heats up food in record time. Not only can you reheat food that has already been cooked, you can even cook or grill a new dish in some cases. Nevertheless, there are some foods that do not belong in the microwave under any circumstances. The warmth of the microwave is not enough for every meal. This is especially true for food that has to be fully cooked for hygienic reasons.
Meat or fish
Food that should not be cooked raw in the microwave under any circumstances are meat and fish. The device cannot heat food evenly and dangerous pathogens can therefore survive. It is better to use the grill, pan or oven for preparation.
But not only raw meat should not be reheated. Likewise, it is not advisable to heat cooked chicken in the microwave, the problem: changes in protein structures and dangerous salmonella. When the chicken is stored, the bacteria multiply. These can still be present even after heating in the microwave. If you don’t want to throw away leftovers, you can heat the meat evenly in the pan.
egg
Eggs have no place in the microwave – regardless of whether they are scrambled eggs, fried eggs or a boiled egg. As with chicken, the protein structures change and the stomach can no longer split the proteins. It is best to only prepare egg dishes fresh. Dishes that contain eggs should only be heated to a high temperature. Raw eggs can explode in the microwave.
mushrooms
It is not recommended to reheat mushrooms in the microwave. If cooked mushrooms are stored in the refrigerator for more than a day, toxins can build up in them. There is a risk of diarrhea or nausea. However, if you keep the mushrooms in the refrigerator for no more than a day, you can still warm them up. The mushrooms should definitely be heated at a high temperature. Under no circumstances should the sponges be warmed up in the microwave a second time.
spinach
Spinach is high in nitrate, so it shouldn’t be microwaved. Because the nitrate is then converted into nitrite. The body does not tolerate this nitrogen compound well and can react with nausea or diarrhea. As with mushrooms, you can still heat the food if it has not been stored in the refrigerator for more than a day. The spinach must also be heated at a high temperature and must not be microwaved a second time.
rice
Cooked rice provides a breeding ground for bacteria if left at room temperature for a long time. Even the heat in the microwave won’t kill the bacteria. To avoid food poisoning, the cooked rice must be placed in the refrigerator immediately after preparation. This is a very simple way of preventing the formation of bacteria. To be on the safe side, the rice should only be reheated in the microwave at a high temperature.
Oil and fried food
Beware, if you warm up oil in the microwave, you run a great risk. Pure oil or frying fat can ignite and start a fire. In addition, a fat or oil fire cannot simply be extinguished with water. Caution should also be exercised with very oily food and fried foods: dangerous gases can be produced when the oil is heated up if the oil becomes too hot.
