These accessories present in our bathrooms are dangerous for children: Femme Actuelle Le MAG

According to the latest data from Public health Franceburns caused 8,120 hospitalizations in France in 2014, including 28.8% were children under 5 years old. A significant percentage, which demonstrates that we must be very vigilant about the risk of burns in children.

A study presented at the American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference and Exhibition looked at the common causes of burns among children in the United States. This study highlighted the danger of electric hairdressing appliances in terms of burns for children.

Burns in children: electrical appliances used for styling hair blamed

Electronic devices such as straighteners, hair dryers or curling irons are an integral part of our daily lives. However, they present a high risk of burns for our children according to an American survey. To carry out their study, the scientists analyzed the causes of emergency room visits in the United States from 2013 to 2022. Following this, they realized that 30,839 burns involving patients aged 24 and under were caused by electronic hair styling devices. Of the patients hospitalized in the emergency departments studied, 68% were aged 10 years or younger and 65.1% were girls. Nearly three-quarters of these injuries occurred at home (72.3%), and 98.6% did not require a hospital stay or other forms of care. A clear observation, which shows the danger that these devices represent for children.

Electrical appliances: raising awareness of their risks from an early age

Brandon L. Rozanski, lead author of the study and pediatric resident at Tripler Army Medical Center said: “Electric hair styling tools can reach temperatures of 450ºF in just a few minutes (approximately 232 degrees Celsius), which creates potential situations of unintentional burns for the user of the device as well as those around them. “

Children are therefore the most likely to get burned with a hairdressing device. To protect children from this risk, we must therefore be vigilant in taking care to store these accessories in storage areas inaccessible to younger children, not to leave them plugged in after use and finally to educate them from a very young age not to touch it alone without supervision.

If, despite all these prevention tips, your child gets burned, do not hesitate to contact emergency services depending on the severity of the burn.
