Apple has fired at least five App Store employees in China for multiple misconduct, including unauthorized interactions with mobile game developers. This incident comes at a bad time for the Apple brand, while its application store is increasingly scrutinized by regulators.
The company has strict rules regarding its staff’s contact with developers. Employees responsible for reviewing applications and writing are required to obtain permission to meet with them. On the other hand, those who deal with developer relations and business management can converse with them, although they must refuse even the smallest gifts or expensive meals.
Unauthorized relationships between App store employees and developers
The employees involved in this matter work in different departments: approving applications, directing developer revenues and selecting applications that will benefit from optimal placement on the App Store home pages. The decision was taken by the Cupertino company following an investigation opened after an internal audit revealed irregularities in 2022.
These employees allegedly had unauthorized contact with mobile game developers and their consultants. Their interactions included accepting free meals and going to nightclubs. Although the dismissed employees did not have direct authority over the approval of the applications, some occupied positions likely to influence the applications presented.
The Chinese App Store is particularly profitable for Apple, especially because of the revenue it earns from mobile games.
The App Store increasingly attracts regulators
“ Apple expects its employees around the world to adhere to its strict ethics and business conduct policies. We investigate reports of inappropriate conduct thoroughly and, where appropriate, do not hesitate to take immediate action, up to and including termination of employment. », Commented a company spokesperson.
The timing of this event is not favorable for the Cupertino company. It coincides with increased scrutiny of App Store activities by global regulators. The US Department of Justice is reportedly preparing a possible lawsuit against Apple to determine how it maintains tight control over its platform.
Across the Atlantic, the European Commission is investigating the restrictions the company imposes on developers. The entry into force of the Digital Markets Act should not help things for Apple. The legislation will force it to allow third-party app stores on its various devices and operating systems.
