fun, news, tips… what else?

In 2022, as every year, a few first names were refused or particularly posed a problem for civil status. And for good reason, they were considered inappropriate or too unusual.

Each year, several first names can see each other refused by civil status. Considered too unusual, too original or likely to cause harm to the child, they are considered unsuitable. As our colleagues from The Dispatch, the history of the name Artus has been widely debated at the start of 2023. And for good reason, this Occitan-sounding name was refused by the city of birth of the baby on the pretext that the letter “ú” does not belong to the French alphabet. The two parents from Lozère therefore had to call their son Artus.

In 2022, some first names were not accepted by civil status. In the Toulouse region, three first names particularly gave the administration a hard time. According to the local newspaper, they were deemed inappropriate and were reported by the respective town halls. This is the first name whiskywhich was finally accepted by the Toulouse prosecutor’s office since its spelling was not the same as that of Whiskey, the first name wolfalso accepted despite its originality, and, finally, first names God willing and Thank God. These two were refused by the municipalities. The parents then filed an appeal. According to them, these are first names that exist in other countries, especially in Haiti or in certain African countries. They finally won their case.
