When it comes to romantic comedy, most people immediately think of superficial entertainment without depth. These four books show that romance novels can also be tough.

Whether on vacation or when everyday life is getting stressful – sometimes we just need a little escapism in book form. Then romantic comedies are just the thing. But just because a book is easy to read doesn’t mean it can’t also be smart and really touch your heart. Fortunately, there are some authors who really know how to write profound romance novels that also tell difficult topics with ease.

4 romantic comedies in book form that will touch you way deeper than you expected

1. “In Love with Your Most Beautiful Sides” by Emily Henry

Emily Henry is one of the most popular authors on Bookstagram and Co. Her debut novel “In love with your most beautiful sides” is a really successful romantic comedy with a typical enemies-to-lovers storyline. The story centers on author January and her old college rival Gus, also a writer. The two meet again by chance, get to know each other anew – and fall in love. The plot is not really surprising, but the book is told really well. In addition, Emily Henry manages to incorporate difficult topics such as grief and the pressure as an author into the story in such a way that it still reads like the perfect beach read (the original English title is, by the way, appropriately “Beach Read”).

2. “Just One More Time” by Colleen Hoover

Colleen Hoover is affectionately known as “CoHo” by her fans. And CoHo has a great talent for writing serious stories in a way that’s still easy to read. Her most famous novel is “Just One More Time”, and it has it all. The emotional story is about domestic violence – a topic that Colleen Hoover had to experience first-hand. And that’s probably why she succeeds so well in telling the love story so relentlessly, honestly and at the same time excitingly. It’s about Lily and Ryle who fall in love. The relationship seems perfect for a while, but before long Ryle shows a whole different side of himself. And that forces Lily to make a momentous decision.

3. “The Theoretical Improbability of Love” by Ali Hazelwood

on the one hand is “The Theoretical Improbability of Love” a classic enemies to lovers love story. Then again, there’s so much more to this Ali Hazelwood social media hype. This includes insights into a – at least for most readers: inside – a completely foreign world. Because the protagonist of the novel is Olive, a biology PhD student at the US elite Stanford University. Through a combination of special circumstances, Olive finds herself in a kind of fake relationship with Adam. In turn, he is a professor at the same university, albeit a fairly unpopular one, as he is considered tough and quite unfriendly. But before long, the two get to know each other in a whole new way, and Olive realizes that Adam can be nice after all. The whole thing sounds like a typical romantic comedy at first, but the story convinces above all with clever dialogues, exciting twists and the special setting of the story in the academic world.

4. “A Godsend” by Liane Moriarty

Anyone looking for a profound novel about women will definitely find what they are looking for with Liane Moriarty. The Aussie is the queen of the chick-lit, but she never stays on the surface. “A Godsend” is one of the author’s best books. In it, Sophie gets a surprising inheritance from the aunt of her ex-boyfriend Thomas. The whole thing is not without problems, but holds many new opportunities for Sophie and the people in her life. The story is clever and multi-layered, because in addition to Sophie’s storyline, the readers also gradually learn everything about the well-kept family secret of Thomas’ aunts Connie and Rose. In each of her novels, Liane Moriarty manages to write lightly and really touchingly and at the same time to make serious topics accessible with fine wit.
