fun, news, tips … what else?

On September 5, on the Place de la Liberté in Brest, several mothers were photographed breastfeeding their children in public. An atypical photo shoot, initiated by a photographer committed to the issue, to finally normalize this nurturing act.

Breastfeeding, everywhere, without judgment or fear, should be trivial. And yet, today, in most of our societies, this nurturing act is far from being. It still elicits a good number of reactions, especially when it is carried out in public spaces. Remember, last May in Bordeaux, a young mother claimed to have been slapped and insulted for free while breastfeeding her infant in front of a store. A case that had made people react. And it is precisely in response to this, among others, that Chloé de Clayre, a 29-year-old photographer, took the initiative to organize on September 5 a group photo to trivialize breastfeeding outdoors, in the city center of Brest.

A photo shoot to normalize breastfeeding

About ten mothers answered Chloe de Clayre’s call. Under his lens, they all posed together, side by side, with their children at the breast. None of them knew each other, but they united for a just and legitimate cause. “It’s not about promoting breastfeeding, it’s about saying that we are free. Public space also belongs to mothers and children, and we are told that it would be better if we hid ”, testifies a participant, Ylona, 25 years old and mother of a little boy of 8 months, to our colleagues of West France. For the photographer, the objective is clear: “To show that a breastfed baby is no more and no less than a baby who is feeding. This awareness raising of public opinion around breastfeeding in the public space also aims to enhance the value of women’s bodies: let’s stop sexualizing it. the mothers body belongs to them ”, she relates to Actu.fr Brittany. And that’s not all.

Places listed to breastfeed serenely

Chloé de Clayre’s initiative is part of a more global approach. With her association Koko Family, she decided to launch a site, Feeding Good, which lists through an interactive map “Living spaces in which parents can feed their children with peace of mind”, she reports to our counterparts. The principle is very simple. Establishments (bars, restaurants or shops) wishing to be stamped with the “Feeding Good” badge must sign a charter that meets certain conditions. For example, the signatories must undertake to welcome parents who wish to feed their babies without asking for financial compensation, not to make “derogatory remarks” about the way the child is fed or even to provide a suitable space and comfortable for parents, time to feed their toddler. A project that has it all!
