Samsung had warned: the new Galaxy AI features integrated into the Galaxy S24, S24 Plus and S24 Ultra will not be reserved for the manufacturer’s latest models. After announcing a deployment on the Galaxy S23 last year, it is now the previous generations which have been the subject of an announcement.

As the site reports Phone Arena, the head of Samsung’s smartphone division, TM Roh, in fact announced, during a call with investors, that Galaxy AI could arrive on smartphones older than those already updated. “The S23, Fold and Flip launched last year will be updated with AI and we are looking at previous models“, indicated the Samsung executive, affirming that his teams “are gradually preparing projects to support a full-fledged Galaxy AI experience“.

The main difficulty for Samsung seems to come from the components integrated into the different smartphones. Not all of them would in fact be compatible with the needs of the functionalities linked to Galaxy AI. “To do AI directly on the device, hardware limitations need to be taken into consideration and a lot of work is required“, clarified TM Roh.

The Galaxy S22 in a good position to be eligible

The Galaxy S22 seems to be best placed among the “previous models» under study at Samsung to take advantage of Galaxy AI – this is notably the most powerful smartphone not yet entitled to these features – in the same way as the Galaxy S22 Plus and S22 Ultra. However, TM Roh did not cite them expressly. Above all, this is still a feasibility study on Samsung’s side and the manufacturer could realize that this update is not possible given hardware limitations.

As a reminder, Galaxy AI brings together a set of features linked to artificial intelligence on Samsung products. These can include functions related to retouching or cropping photos, as well as wording messages or instant translation.
