During their diplomatic tour of the Caribbean, Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton made a stop in Jamaica. A controversial visit.

While the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were on a diplomatic tour in the Caribbean and more particularly in three Commonwealth countries, Belize, Jamaica and the Bahamas, an event, and more precisely a series of photos, came to taint this trip. Indeed, if the objective was to strengthen the ties between the British Crown and its former colonies on the occasion of the platinum jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, this visit has, on the contrary, created a lively controversy.

On March 22, Prince William and Kate Middleton were at Trench Town, a neighborhood located in Kingston, the capital of Jamaica, to meet the locals. Followed by several photographers, the royal couple were pictured greeting and shaking hands with several Jamaican children, glued to an imposing fence. Clichés which have not gone unnoticed and which have been strongly criticized.

Images that should have been avoided

“This image is very powerful, it reflects the underlying themes of Kate and William’s tour”says British journalist Nadine White on Twitter, whose publication was relayed by an article by BFM TV. For its part, the BBC conjures up a parody of white savior complex. For other specialists, like Omid Scobiethese pictures are a error on the part of the communication team. “I wonder what the organizers of their tour were thinking when taking these photos”analyzes the journalist and author of Finding Freedombiography of Kate and William. “These events are planned with great precision, and each location is reconnoitred, so why hasn’t anyone thought to avoid this kind of imagery? That’s why having a team diversity is paramount.”
