Almost three years after its release, and while gamers are eagerly awaiting the arrival of a Pro model, PlayStation 5 unveils its very first prototypes.

While the PS5 Slim could arrive sooner than you think, prototypes of the original model are appearing on the Web at prices that are not at all excessive. No, no, not in the least…

Do you remember the PS5 dev kits?

Let’s go back a few years (yes, already!), when the PS5 was still only rumors and rumors. In 2019, Sony filed a patent presenting an imposing “V” shaped machine. It took no less than a few weeks to learn that this design, to say the least astonishing, was none other than the development kit for Sony’s future console. This had been sent months before the official release of the PS5 in order to allow the studios to get their hands on the machine, and thus produce titles that would take full advantage of its specificities.

If the final design of the PlayStation 5, unveiled in June 2020, turned out to be relatively different from the development kit, the latter has obviously not finished talking about it, almost three years after the launch of the console.

PS5 prototypes released into the wild (and not at any price)

As the site tells us TechPowerUp, PS5 prototypes recently went on sale on Yahoo! Auctions in Japan. As you can see, through the images shared by the media Wololo on Twitter, the design of this prototype is very close to that of the development kits discovered in 2019. Called “Prototype 2”, and normally prohibited from distribution, this PS5 was nevertheless offered at auction for the modest sum of… 5 $500. Note that this is obviously the starting price.

It would seem that these prototypes are versions of PlayStation 5 that predate the development kits that we know. For information, another model of this type, bearing this time the mention “Prototype 1”, was sold last week at a price of 3,810 dollars. In order to appeal to the most relentless collectors, these offers are only available at auction for a limited period of 24 hours. It now remains to be seen whether Sony will (re)act to put an end to these actions…
