” HASin the name of Almighty God. […] I want to inform all Muslims that the author of the book titled The Satanic Verses, which was written, printed and published in opposition to Islam, the Prophet and the Quran, as well as those who published it and know its contents, were sentenced to death. I call on all zealous Muslims to execute them quickly, wherever they are…” This is the edict (fatwa), launched by Ayatollah Khomeini against the writer Salman Rushdie (born in 1947) on February 14, 1989. The order to kill is accompanied by a comfortable reward. Thirty-three years later, on Friday August 12, 2022, Salman Rushdie was attacked while on stage at a conference in New York State. The writer, stabbed in the neck, was taken to hospital.
