Data from a study carried out for that year are available this Tuesday, December 19. And the three diseases that account for the most deaths are Covid, which is still the third cause of death with 9.2% of all deaths, diseases of the circulatory system (20.9%, up) and the cancer (25.7%, down). They alone cause more than one in two deaths in France.
Cancer remains the leading cause of death: “Mortality due to tumors continues to trend downward, with the exception of pancreatic tumors and melanomas, still on the rise”, explained the authors of the study. Regarding diseases of the circulatory system, they represent “the leading cause of death among those aged 85 and over”. For Covid, “two-thirds of deaths due to this disease in 2021 took place in public health establishments which accounted for only 43% of deaths from all causes”, the study reported. As a reminder, the elderly were the most impacted. The median age of deaths was set at 84 years.

“The male mortality rate is higher”
According to this study, men die more than women (50.4% of deaths): “The male mortality rate is 1.7 times higher than the female rate.” The youngest patients are the most affected: “This excess male mortality is higher among those under 65, with still an inequality between men and women.
