Various brands of organic corn tortilla chips, marketed throughout France, are the subject of a product recall. They are suspected of containing traces of tropane alkaloids in the corn flour used for their preparation.
It is one of the key elements of summer aperitifs. This Tuesday, July 26, the government site Rappel Conso has just sounded the alert on several brands of corn tortilla chip packets marketed throughout France. These products sold in the following brands: Carrefour, Casino, Vival, Spar, Cora, Match Supermarkets, Houra and Migros, have been recalled by their manufacturer. The latter suspects the presence of traces of tropane alkaloids in the maize flour used for their preparation.
The products concerned are therefore:
- Carrefour organic chili tortilla chipssold between February 24 and July 22, 2022
- Casino organic tortilla chipssold between February 16 and July 25, 2022, with an expiry date between August 9 and November 6, 2022
- Alnatura organic paprika corn chipssold between April 12 and July 26, 2022, with an expiry date between September 12 and December 3, 2022
- Alnatura organic plain corn chipssold between March 31 and July 26, 2022, with an expiry date between September 9 and December 2, 2022
- corn rolls flavored with Alnatura organic mild salsa saucesold between March 3 and July 26, 2022, with an expiry date between August 22 and December 7, 2022
Alkaloids, a harmful effect on health
Alkaloids are a set of molecules of natural origin, which contain carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen. These substances of plant origin have a powerful toxic and harmful action for health which is similar to morphine. In some cases, they can have a stimulating and sometimes even therapeutic effect.
The recall procedure which started on Tuesday should last until the end of August. The Rappel Conso platform asks consumers to no longer consume these products if they have already been purchased and to destroy them. If you have one of these batches of tortilla chips, you can also return them to the store where you purchased them for claim a refund.
