these two brands of IUDs are targeted by health authorities

A second alert was issued on the “without emergency” withdrawal of these IUDs, the effectiveness of which is not guaranteed.

This is an alert from theNational Medicines Safety Agency, relayed by AFP: two brands of IUD are again called to be removed. The Ancora and Novaplus models ceased to be marketed in November 2019. People who have benefited from them are called upon to have them removed without emergency at their gynecologist, their general practitioner or their midwife. Indeed, these devices are singled out: “Numerous reports, in particular of pregnancy or spontaneous expulsion, continue to be reported to the ANSM concerning Ancora or Novaplus models having been placed until March 2019”, explains the Medicines Agency. What are the evocative signs of a spontaneous expulsion? If abdominal pain occurs, bleeding outside the period, an absent or too long traction thread, pain during sexual intercourse, the people concerned must have the reflex to go and consult the Agency immediately.

Recommendations for the removal of these IUDs

Due to an increased risk of breakage during removal, healthcare professionals responsible for gynecological monitoring (gynecologists, general practitioners and midwives) are advised to proceed with caution. A document relayed by AFP details the recommendations: “Perform a slow and constant pull by pulling the wires, then visually check the integrity of the device once removed. […] In the event of a rupture and the persistence of a fragment inside the uterus, perform an ultrasound after the next menstruation (the residual fragment may be expelled during menstruation) “.
