they entrusted their gynecological follow-up to a midwife and explained their choice

Out of necessity or for more personal reasons, many women carry out their gynecological follow-ups with a midwife. Laura, Justine and Léa are among them. They explain to us what motivated their decision.

Often associated with maternity and pregnancy monitoring, midwives actually have a much broader spectrum of skills. They are capable of performing a gynecological follow-up on women of all ages, who have already had children or not. They are also authorized to carry out various examinations and medical procedures: smears, installation or removal of the IUD, vaccination, STI and cancer screening, ultrasound or even IVG. They can also prescribe contraceptives and deliver prevention messages on sexuality, consent as well as domestic violence and/or violence against women.

But the arguments that push women to consult a midwife are often much more personal. “More attentive”, “More gentle”, “More easily reachable”… To understand this choice, we asked 3 women to explain to us why they preferred to entrust their gynecological follow-up to a midwife. Laura, Justine and Léa share their experiences with us.

“I thought midwives only took care of pregnancy monitoring” Laura, 28 years old

“Since I was a teenager, I have seen the same gynecologist about once a year, and I really like her. After several moves, I had difficulty maintaining regular follow-up with her and I was forced to find another solution. Unfortunately, the gynecologists in my new city were all unavailable for several months or were not taking new patients… So I made an appointment with a midwife without really knowing what I was getting myself into! I was surprised to discover that the classic gynecological follow-up was the same as with my gynecologist (smears, ultrasound, chest palpation, etc.) and that she could also renew my prescriptions for my contraception or prescribe blood tests. . I thought that midwives only took care of monitoring pregnancy.”

“I found a person who was more attentive” Justine, 34 years old

“Maybe I’m unlucky, but I’ve often come across gynecologists who are a bit cold and distant. My appointments were very medicalized, quick and without real human contact. I had a little apprehension every time I went to a gynecologist… The first gynecological follow-up experience I had with a midwife was completely different. The consultation was much longer and the person in front of me really listened. It’s really stupid, but she suggested that I not undress completely if it was more comfortable for me, she explained to me each gesture she was going to make… So many little touches that made the moment much more pleasant and less stressful. Since that day, I have only done my gynecological follow-ups with midwives.”

“A real financial gain” Léa, 22 years old

“I sometimes postponed my appointments with the gynecologist because the price was too high for me. After the recommendations of my friends, and because I did not have any particular pathology, I decided to have my gynecological follow-ups with a midwife. This is a real financial gain for me*! And, above all, I do not lose the quality of follow-up and advice. I also find that my midwife is more easily available to answer my questions by email or telephone”

*a consultation with an approved midwife is reimbursed by Health Insurance on the basis of 70% and the rest paid by mutual insurance (or supplementary health insurance).
