Julian Nagelsmann is a modern coach. If circumstances require it, he also coaches his team from a hotel room. He sometimes comes to training with his skateboard and now the FC Bayern Munich coach is looking to horses for help. You should make him better.

Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann’s appearance has not appealed to everyone over the course of his career. “I always had the problem that people who saw me for the first time always said he was extremely arrogant,” reported the coach of the Bundesliga soccer club Bayern Munich in the club podcast. Based on these statements, he sought advice from a trainer who confronted executives with horses.

“Horses aren’t creatures that judge. Horses react to your aura,” Nagelsmann explained his decision at the time. “And if you come into a paddock and all the horses run away, then you’re obviously a bit too dominant in your demeanor.”

At the beginning of the seminar, Nagelsmann describes it, the horses tried to break through the fences when he appeared. Three days later, however, the animals all came to him. “And the whole time they followed me in the paddock for two hours in the dark.”

Through many conversations, Nagelsmann learned to appear differently to his counterpart. “Of course you try to take this effect into the dressing room,” said the Upper Bavarian. Body language and looks are more important than words.

“Managers often have poor self-awareness. The reason: they lack an honest reflection partner,” says a website on which such training is offered: “That’s why horses make sense. Like a mirror, they absolutely reflect people’s behavior objective and authentic.” The great advantage of horses is that they “act with respect and don’t ramble on about it.”
