BRUSSELS (Reuters) – European Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton on Tuesday called on Apple CEO Tim Cook to open the American group’s highly protected ecosystem of software and services to its competitors.

“The duty of Apple and other Big Tech players, under the DMA (Digital Markets Act), is to open their doors to competitors,” Thierry Breton told Reuters.
“Whether e-wallet, browsers or app stores, consumers using an Apple iPhone should be able to benefit from competitive services from a range of providers,” he said. added.
Apple declined to comment.
The recently passed DMA establishes a list of duties and prohibitions for Apple and other large technology companies to increase competition.
The EU commissioner also attacked Apple’s arguments that security and privacy concerns are the reason its ecosystem is closed.
“EU regulations promote innovation, without compromising security and privacy,” he said.
