Thieves on Netflix: why is this music superstar mentioned in the film?

In the film “Voleuses” by Mélanie Laurent, a certain singer, well known to the French, is mentioned several times. But why exactly?

Carried by a great cast, Voleuses de and avec Mélanie Laurent tells the adventures of a trio of burglars involved in one last perilous mission. In the latter part of the plot, a music superstar is mentioned several times. This is Mylène Farmer.

The characters, who are supposed to steal La Grande Odalisque, understand that they are in the middle of filming her new video clip. Why such a wink? The singer and the director met at the 74th Cannes Film Festival in 2021, when they were members of the jury. They subsequently became friends.

Sign of destiny: during the filming of Voleuses, Mélanie Laurent was contacted by Mylène Farmer to produce the music video for one of her new titles, Rekindle the stars. At that time, the artist didn’t even know that his name was mentioned in the film. Despite her busy schedule, the filmmaker was finally able to direct the clip.

To go even further in the bond that unites the two women, the leader of the group Archive, Darius Keeler, – who composes the original music of Voleuses – himself worked for Mylène Farmer on her album Bleu noir in 2010. The loop is closed.

Thieves is available on Netflix.
