Samsung strongly believes in the folding smartphone. Evidenced by its early commitment to the issue, which earned it to become the leader of this market still in its infancy. The South Korean firm recently held an event called Mobile Experience Business, the newspaper reports. TheElec. On this occasion, she notably poured out on the subject.
Samsung spoke directly to its suppliers, explaining to them that the sector was about to take on a new dimension. According to the newspaper’s sources, folding devices currently represent 1% of the market. There is therefore a lot to do to convert new consumers.
According to the company, the compound annual growth rate could reach 80% by 2025. It also claims that 90% of current folding smartphone owners will remain on this format for their next purchase.
A well-filled specification
Samsung reiterated the challenges suppliers would face to support this democratization. The specifications calling for lightening the devices, making them thinner and making the fold invisible as much as possible, the firm therefore asked them to use lighter and more durable materials. The development of applications better thought out for the 4:3 ratio of the screen was also mentioned.
Samsung also wants to offer an experience worthy of premium photography. It is true that folding smartphones have never really shone in this exercise. It is therefore necessary that the on-board sensors justify the still very high prices of these models. This is even more true on devices like the Galaxy Z Fold, the latest version of which still cost €1,799 at launch. Samsung also explained that it had to make photo concessions on the latter because of limitations imposed by the thickness of its device.
An extra stylus
If the clamshell smartphone allows by nature to be more compact, the “booklet” format must cover a greater number of uses. Once unfolded, the large screen must therefore be more productive. The firm has announced that it wants the next devices in the Galaxy Z Fold range to have a slot for the S-Pen. A request that had already been made for the Galaxy Z Fold 4, which supports the stylus. Such integration makes sense since the format lends itself perfectly. We can therefore expect changes with the next generation.
Apple running in
Regarding the competition, Samsung expects Apple to enter this sector from 2024, but not with smartphones. The Cupertino company would first be interested in this technology for a tablet or a laptop.
A statement that makes sense as Apple dominates this segment, and must stay one step ahead. Given the success of its latest iPhone 14s (especially the Pros), it can probably afford to wait for the market to mature further.
