A few months ago, designer Kevin Bates launched a small portable console: Arduboy. A machine with (true) false airs of Nintendo Game Boy, which wishes to perpetuate the ” good old 8 bit video game “, while stimulating the creativity of the players.
Indeed, the Arduboy is based on an open-source architecture allowing everyone to develop their own game. The machine has several hundred titles, some of which are directly inspired by the hits of our childhood, such as Zelda, Tetris or Castlevania.
The same, in mini version
A few days ago, this same Kevin Bates posted his new project: Arduboy Mini. It’s still a portable console, but this mini version is smaller than ever, with an OLED screen (128 x 64 pixels), a USB port and six buttons, grafted onto a motherboard the size of a computer. a (small) box of matches.
Stripped of shell, the Arduboy Mini is powered by a 16 MHz ATmega32u4 processor, is stripped of battery and even speaker. Like the first Arduboy, the objective here is to encourage users to use their hacking talents, at the level of the games therefore, but also at the level of the machine. This is the reason why the Arduboy Mini can accommodate speakers and a battery, provided you put a little elbow grease into it.
The unit price of the Arduboy Mini is set at $29, with a first salvo of shipments scheduled for sometime in June. The project has already blown its initial goal of $10,000, with the Arduboy Mini being funded at over $57,000.
