Imagine you want to plan a short weekend getaway a few hours’ drive from home. You book a hotel, plan what you’re going to do, look at the reviews of a few restaurants, check how much electricity you’re going to need for the car… and you end up watch the weather forecast. It would be a shame to do all that only to end up in the rain, right? It’s reliable in general, but if you look now for 8 days, not sure that the estimates will be confirmed on D-day.

Don’t worry,‘artificial intelligence comes to the rescue. When we tell you that it is used for everything! This one is called GraphCast. Developed by DeepMindDepartment of Google specialized in AI, it is announced as a revolution in weather forecasting. Already tested, the GraphCast system has proven to be more efficient than HRES (High-Resolution Forecast), the most precise currently available. Last September, for example, the AI predicted that Hurricane Lee was going to hit Nova Scotia in Canada 9 days until it happens. Traditional systems did this 6 days early.

An artificial intelligence predicts the weather over 10 days more precisely than everyone else

GraphCast was also more accurate than HRES when predicting where the hurricane would land in the region. It is all the more surprising that the AI was not specifically trained for this. He was simply implanted with a cyclone tracker. Such results could make it possible to better anticipate natural disasters of this kind and reduce the number of victims. On the other hand, the teams note that GraphCast is less good when it comes to estimating the intensity of the tornado.

DeepMind’s artificial intelligence is also the best on the prediction of the weather in the next 10 days. She is far from having reached her full potential, and to enable her to get there, its model has recently become open-source. Everyone can therefore use it to find other uses for it or simply ensure that GraphCast never makes a mistake when relying on it to plan a barbecue.
