A special fashion show took place in Hong Kong at the end of the year, with artificial intelligence among the little hands.

How far will artificial intelligence go? Already applicable to many health issues and ready to do kids’ homework, it looks like AI could also quickly find its way into the fashion world. This is what this parade that has just taken place in Hong Kong shows us.

Fashion, a new victim of the success of AI?

If, for many, the arrival of artificial intelligence is now inevitable in many technical fields, we could at least expect that the creative sectors will remain a human preserve for some time to come.

Could it be an illusion? It must be said that counter-examples tend to accumulate. We have recently seen artists rise up against images generated by AI, while a tool based on this same technology can now help screenwriters. This advance seems endless and is now affecting the fashion world.

The Fashion x AI Show, which has just been held in Hong Kong, was indeed an opportunity to present 80 outfits made by 14 designers. Their development was done in collaboration with AI company AiDA, an acronym for AI-based Interactive Design Assistant.

An AI that does the middle work

The technology uses techniques such as detection, recognition and image generation. Developed by doctoral students and academics from Hong Kong, it is designed as a support for the designer.

The latter thus has the possibility of integrating drafts, materials or color palettes into the virtual moodboard of the software. The AI then takes care of rendering drafts which can be amended by the designer in order to add his personal touch. It thus allows in a sense to chew the work in the most thankless stages of creation without taking part in the initial intuition nor in the finishing touches.

And over the course of the productions, the AI is able to make proposals that are more and more in tune with the creator’s symbolic universe. “ In accordance with my lines, my styles and my databases, the system will offer me something that I may never have considered, but that it [AiDA] think it suits me says stylist Mountain Yam, who has been using AI for the past 6 months. And to poetically sum up this new symbiosis: Our relationship is comparable to a romantic relationship in that I gradually learn to [AiDA] know when she gradually got to know my own creations. »
