A Swiss transport company has traveled no less than 3,000 kilometers in an electric Volvo truck.

Enough to demonstrate that long-distance journeys are possible… but with some reservations, however.

Electricity is becoming more and more common in commercial transport

A few days ago, Volvo Trucks announced the adoption by the Mauffrey Group of a new Volvo FH Electric truck. It is a 100% electric truck of 44 tons, equipped with 6 batteries with a total capacity of 540 kWh. He will be responsible for carrying out one of the daily shuttles between the Eqiom depot in Chelles (77) and the concrete plants (BPE) in Alfortville (94) and Tolbiac Paris XIII (75).

While Tesla also aims to flood the roads with its Semi electric truck, Volvo wanted to demonstrate the capabilities of its FH Electric. The Swiss logistics company Krummen Kerzers took part in an atypical road trip, with a round trip between Valencia (in Spain) and Zurich aboard a truck loaded with 20 tonnes of oranges.

3,000 kilometers of distance covered…. In a week

Krummen Kerzers announces that it has entrusted this mission to its driver Balint Schnell, who discovered driving an e-truck for the first time. He was obviously required to respect the driving and rest times imposed by the EU, which led him to stop about twenty times. Added to this is the planning of charging times, so that they coincide with breaks.

In total, the road trip will have taken a week… compared to 4 days if it had been done on board a traditional thermal truck. For Volvo, it was obviously a question of demonstrating that long-distance journeys are possible on board an electric truck, even if the roads and the charging infrastructures are not yet completely adapted to this new zero-emission transport.

As soon as a station was used by other vehicles, the loading speed decreased enormously », Explains in particular Balint Schnell. Some recharges thus required no less than 3 hours instead of just one in normal times.
