This Alpine electric mountain bike relies on its power to tame technical routes


The Alpine Trail E range of electric mountain bikes is being updated with a new basic model featuring the Shimano EP6 motor with a phenomenal torque of 85 Nm. The other versions see their range increase thanks to a more generous battery.

The electric mountain bike market has been booming for many months now, with multiple new references and regular catalog updates. Recently, we were able to try the VTTAE Mustache Trail 9, which simply impressed us during two outings in the forest.

This time, it’s the Californian manufacturer Marin Bikes that is making headlines. Bike Rumor indeed tells us that a renewal of the Alpine Trail E family has been announced, with on the one hand the integration of Shimano’s new 630 Wh battery, and on the other the introduction of a new basic model named Marin Alpine Trail E Base.

A very torquey engine

The latter is the most affordable of the range: 4999 euros. This may seem exorbitant at first. Except that electric mountain bikes generally have a particular design in terms of frame and geometry in order to adapt to technical routes, but also and above all benefit from the most high-end components on the market.

Here, the Marin Alpine Trail E Base relies for example on the Shimano EP6 motor, which offers similar performance to the EP8 but weighs slightly heavier on the scale: 3 kg against 2.7 kg. Regardless, its 85 Nm of torque should guarantee it great dynamism and more than impressive liveliness.

By default, this two-wheeler comes with the Shimano 504 Wh battery. But if you wish, a 630 Wh accumulator can be swapped to extend the autonomy of the bike. In terms of suspension, you have to rely on an RC Trace 36 fork (160 mm travel) and an O2 Pro RXC rear shock (150 mm travel).

The TranzX Dropper telescoping saddle (150mm over travel on the S model) is more than welcome to play with your riding position with just a pull of the trigger. It is an excellent piece of equipment to adapt in no time to the type of terrain you face, whether uphill or downhill.

Short-term availability

On the transmission side, the Alpine Trail E Base offers a Shimano Deore 10-speed, combined with Shimano MT420 4-piston hydraulic disc brakes, whose discs reach 203 mm. The 29-inch Vee Tire Attack HPL front tire is paired with a 27.5-inch Vee Tire Crown Gem rear tire.
