Researchers generated their robot’s facial expressions using OpenAI’s GPT-3 language model on which ChatGPT is based. The result is simply stunning.

Human-like facial expressions

The company posted an intriguing tweet of Ameca conversing with a human in crystal clear fashion, and clarified that “ the appropriate facial expressions in this video are selected by GPT-3 “. The pictures are impressive.

The Ameca interlocutor carefully chooses his questions in order to generate various facial expressions in the robot. He first asks her to remember the happiest day of her life. With a smile on his face, the humanoid replies that it is the day he was activated. “ There’s nothing quite like experiencing life for the first time, is there? “, he enthuses.

This is just the beginning

In order to generate even more advanced expressions, the robot is informed that an asteroid is about to crash into Earth, so it puts on a fearful face. Engineered Arts explains that they tried to generate these responses with GPT-4, but the processing time was too slow, Ameca seeming less responsive.

To interact with the public, the robot incorporates microphones, binocular cameras mounted on its eyes, a chest camera and facial recognition software. Its artificial limbs, ligaments and sensor arrays are all made using state-of-the-art technology. He is currently unable to walk.
