Analogue, the big names in retro-gaming equipment and manufacturers of machines supporting console cartridges like the NES, Super NES and recently the Gameboy with the Analogue Pocket, will still keep your nostalgic fiber alive. The company has just announced that it is working on Analogue 3D, its version of the Nintendo 64 compatible with 4K screens.

A Nintendo 64 that is both retro and modern

It is well known that Nintendo does not offer convincing emulation of its Nintendo 64 games on its Switch console. Analogue intends to correct this slight with Analogue 3D, which will be compatible with the console’s original cartridges, without using any emulation process thanks to FPGA programming (which imitates the language of the original console).

If the Analogue 3D is 4K compatible, it will also be able to offer display modes imitating the flows of old CRT and PVM screens, as is now standard on this type of machine. The console will offer wireless controllers from the 8BitDo brand with a design close to the original.

The first Analogue console in 3D

This is a major milestone in the history of Analogue, which has been working on Analogue 3D for three years now according to its founder Christopher Taber (via The Verge). In addition to responding to the frustration of Nintendo fans, it marks a real technological turning point for this type of machine, thus offering a reliable and faithful alternative to retro-gaming enthusiasts attached to their original cartridges.

We currently do not know much more about the Analogue 3D which is planned for 2024 with no price announced yet. And given the enthusiasm generated by the manufacturer’s old machines, you will have to be keen and patient to hope to get your hands on one.
