The fight against piracy sometimes feels like a never-ending battle. To see concrete effects, you very often have to go through the legislative box with the promulgation of specific laws. For example, by publicly disclosing illegal sites, which sometimes results in very heavy penalties for their creators. A European country has chosen this path in particular to put an end to the illegal broadcasting of sports matchesfootball in mind.

Last June, Italian legislators prepared a sweeping law to block IPTV (internet television) hacker. The streaming service DAZNspecializing in sports, urges them to speed up the process, recalling that piracy causes the industry to lose €800,000 per day. The law passes on July 14 and must come into force on August 8, 11 days before the start of the Serie A championshipthe equivalent of Ligue 1 football in Italy.

IPTV blocking should end piracy in Italy from October, not before

In the Italian media, August 8 is a day to mark with a white stone. Pirate IPTV services will be totally blockedbut in addition, people who have bought what to use it now risk a €5000 fine. Upon its entry into force, the system identifies approximately 100 violations of the law… and nothing happens. No blockage occurs, no sanction is issued.

Among the explanations for this failure, the obligation for the companies in charge of blocking meet around a “technical round table” before any action. This makes sense when you know that blocking streaming can affect legitimate services by mistake. Others accuse the Italian government of not having moved quickly enough to allow better preparation upstream. Finally, the system should be fully operational in October. According to a source familiar with the matter, “the platform is crazy and will solve [le problème du] digital piracy”. We are waiting to see.
