If Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films have revived – or simply started – your passion for this sci-fi universe, know that a video game is in preparation… and that it is not afraid of change.

If the Summer Game Fest was an opportunity to get to know Lego Horizon Adventures or Quidditch Champions, we also discovered a new trailer for Dune Awakening, the open world survival MMO which adapts – after Denis’ films Villeneuve – the famous universe of Frank Herbert… But, unlike the Canadian director’s feature films, this video game will not follow the plot of the original works. Developers at Funcom instead imagined an alternate reality without Paul Atreidesmessiah hero who nevertheless saves the people of the planet Arrakis.

“A future that never existed”

“The only peace I find is a future that never existed,” says Paul Atréides in the trailer in question. “One where I was never born (…) “And if my mother had obeyed her orders and given birth to a girl, everything would be different”. The hero’s father would still be alive, his family would have survived – and Assassins would have ravaged Arrakis to take control of the Spice and exterminate the Fremen.

This is where the player comes into play, having to participate in the reconstruction of the famous planet. But, it is not yet confirmed that Paul Atreides never existed in this Dune Awakening. Maybe he died young? In any case, Funcom plans to say more in a new Direct which will be held on June 20 at 6 p.m. (French time).

Get ready to discover the details of Dune: Awakening’s alternate timeline. What key moment have we changed from the books and films, and what will this mean for the situation on Arrakis? What role will major factions such as the Atreides, Harkonnen and Fremen have to play? We’ll also reveal things about the narrative side of the game, including aspects such as religion – The Dune Awakening Direct program for June 20, 2024

A very ambitious project

For now, Dune Awakening does not yet have a release date but will eventually be available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series. On its official website, Funcom talks about a “unique” open-world survival MMO | extremely ambitious”. Here, players will have to face the dangers of Arrakis and make the most of social interactions to take control of the planet. In other words, we can’t wait to see more.
