After portraying French life in Lisbon in his first short film, Ruben Alves once again explores the relationship between France and Portugal in his first feature film, entitled La Cage Dorée.

He is inspired in particular by his own parents’ journey to imagine the main characters Maria and José Ribeiro. This couple of Portuguese immigrants is unanimous in their beautiful Parisian neighborhood. They are so appreciated that no one wants to see them return to Portugal!

Awarded the Public Prize at the Alpe d’Huez Festival, this generous family chronicle on uprooting stands out by twisting its necks with clichés and relying on an impeccable Franco-Portuguese cast.

These include Chantal Lauby, Joaquim de Almeida, Rita Blanco and Maria Vieira, an extremely popular actress in her country, who did not speak French before filming.

Upon its release in 2013, The golden cage attracts 1.2 million cinema viewers. It is also the most successful French film in Portugal, where it has accumulated more than 700,000 admissions.
