In 1973, Richard Fleischer took over the novel “Soleil Vert” (“Make room! Make room!” in VO) by writer Harry Harrison, describing a society where men have exhausted natural resources, to adapt it to the cinema. He moves his plot from 1999 to 2022, surrounding himself in particular with Frank R. Bowerman, former president of theAmerican Academy for Environmental Protectionas technical adviser.
A precursor film, therefore, mixing police investigation (Charlton Heston embodies a dogged cop responsible for investigating the death of the president) and science fiction (overpopulation, global warming, voluntary euthanasia), alerting on an economic and ecological crisis not so far ours, which ends with an absolutely chilling revelation.
“Soleil vert, a science fiction film, almost borders on a documentary. All that I showed there in a fictional capacity is now topical. This film is a farewell to the second Terrestrial Paradise destroyed this time by humans“said Richard Fleischer, years after the release of his absolute masterpiece.
Classic of the genre, winner of the Saturn Award for Best Science Fiction Film, Soleil Vert has an average viewer rating of 4 out of 5 on AlloCiné.
