In 1998, Luc Besson wrote the screenplay for Taxi in about thirty days: Daniel, a taxi driver from Marseille who is crazy about driving, is offered to help Emilien, a police officer who has failed in his driving license, to dismantle a gang of bank robbers. who roams the region aboard powerful vehicles. Busy with the production and staging of another project – The Fifth Element -, Luc Besson entrusts the direction of this film to Gérard Pirès.
The recipe takes hold right away: rhythm, a great show through crazy chases and stunts, humorous lines that have become cult, and the Samy Naceri-Frédéric Diefenthal tandem that works like thunder. The public is at the rendezvous. More than 6 million French go to theaters. This is the start of a legendary film saga, which includes two other opuses directed by Gérard Krawczyk in 2003 and 2007, until the recent reboot of the franchise by Franck Gastambide.
Taxi 2 is therefore released on screens two years after the first part and uses exactly the same ingredients that made it successful: the return of our favorite characters, intense action scenes and humor that is still just as schoolboy. The film also proved to be more lucrative than its predecessor – and its successors – attracting more than 10 million spectators in theaters in France.
