This evening on TV: this film is Gérard Jugnot’s biggest worldwide success

Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: Gérard Jugnot dad of a capricious Camille Lou.

Looking at the Mexican film Nosotros los Nobles by Gaz Alazraki, released in 2013 (and itself inspired by another Mexican film from 1949, titled El gran Calavera), French director Nicolas Cuche sees some potential in it.

The story is that of a patriarch who makes his three children, lazy, capricious and party animals, believe that he is ruined and that they will have to work to earn a living. Himself the father of three children, Nicolas Cuche is particularly seduced by the current problem of transmission: how to give a taste for effort and work to young people who perhaps have, thanks to their parents, an easier life. ? How to face the temptations of brands, fashion, overconsumption?

In 2021, he is therefore staging a French remake, under the title Pourris gâtés. In the role of the father of the family, Nicolas Cuche hires Gérard Jugnot. The latter gives the reply to Artus, in the skin of the eldest of the siblings, completely incompetent in the business; to Camille Lou (whom the director had already directed in Les Bracelets rouges) as a slightly scatterbrained daddy’s girl; and finally to the budding actor Louka Meliava, who plays Alex, the youngest, supposedly anarchist, in the rejection of the system and money, while he takes full advantage of it.

Upon its release in France on September 15, 2021, Spoiled rotten has more than 440,000 entries. A modest score, but far from shameful given the situation linked to the Covid-19 pandemic. After its exploitation in the cinema, the rights of the film are bought by Netflix for a broadcast abroad at the end of November 2021, under the title Spoiled Brats. On the platform, it accumulates 10 million views for its first weekend, then rises to fifth place in the ranking of the best “first week”.

Asked by BFMTV, Gérard Jugnot had expressed his surprise and his joy to see his comedy popular with viewers around the world: “It’s pretty crazy to see [que le film cartonne] in Honduras, Ecuador, Brazil, Mexico. (…) We knew that the film was pleasant and touched people, but from there to receiving emails from Ecuador and Brazil… That means it’s a good film.”
