The ecological repair bonus will extend to smartphone screens from the start of next year.

During an interview given to West France, the Minister of Ecological Transition, Christophe Béchu, commented on several upcoming measures as part of the ecological planning put in place by the government. And one of them should be of particular interest to the clumsiest among us.

Help to repair the broken screen of your smartphone

From 1er January 2024, having your broken smartphone screen repaired will entitle you to financial assistance, declared the minister. This initiative aims to encourage users to have their mobile device repaired rather than buying a new one, in order to reduce the impact of the electronics industry on the environment.

A repair bonus has already been launched in December 2022 to encourage the repair of many electronic products and household appliances. It even increased during the year 2023. If smartphones are part of the program, there is currently an exception. In fact, the repair of smartphone screens is not part of the system. The government believed that it was more a case of negligence on the part of the consumer, and not a breakdown that they could do nothing about.

The situation will therefore change in a few months. Christophe Béchu specifies that “ the precise amount [de l’aide, ndlr] still subject to arbitration “. The repair of a mobile phone, excluding a broken screen, now provides assistance of 25 euros. Next year the bonus will increase by at least 5 euros for all authorized devices.

More certified repairers

For Bertrand Reygner, director of institutional and technical relations at Ecologic interviewed by The worldthis decision ” could capture a significant portion » of the budget allocated to the project. He explains that this is one of the most common problems users encounter, and that several million phone screens are replaced each year.

He therefore fears that to finance this new bonus, the amount of the eco-contribution levied on the sale of new devices will have to be increased. For the moment, the coffers of the program for the year 2023 are still full.

Another objective will be to make it easier to obtain repair aid by granting a label to a greater number of repairers. From 4,000, the ministry wants to increase to 7,500 by 2024, to reach “ up to 22,000 at the end of 2026 “.
