Our smartphones are getting smarter and smarter, but when it comes to managing our contact list, things are still complex. With the May 2023 Google Update, the Google Contacts application receives a small change, fundamental to its behavior.

Do not lose your smartphone contacts

Here’s how Google indicates the change brought by this update.

Disabling syncing with Google Contacts now causes previously synced contacts to be deleted from your Android phone

As you can read, now, disabling synchronization with Google Contacts will delete contacts already saved on the phone. In other words, it is no longer possible to keep an offline version of your contact list by deleting the synchronization. Luckily, you shouldn’t lose your list with the slightest loss of network access, but this is a significant limit put in place by Google.

In case of disappearance, a visit to the Google Contacts site should make it possible to verify that nothing has been lost. If your loved ones notice disappearances of contacts in their address book in the coming weeks, you can guess where it comes from.
